Kalamazoo Christian defeated Hackett Catholic 42-31 Friday evening for their first girls basketball victory against the Irish since February 21, 2014.
The SAC Valley rivals went back-and-forth with five lead changes in the first quarter. The Irish held a 14-12 lead at the end of the first, but lost the lead early in the second quarter and never got it back. The Comets held Hackett to two points in the second and three in the third, although the game remained close with a 21-16 halftime score and 25-19 mark after three. Kalamazoo Christian finally got their lead to double-digits early in the fourth.
Carmen Katje led the Comets with 15 points, nine coming in the second half. Elise VanSparrentak had nine, eight in the first half. Sydney Preston topped Hackett with 16.
Kalamazoo Christian improves to 5-2 overall and 3-1 within the SAC Valley, only behind unbeaten Schoolcraft. They host Valley foe Delton Kellogg Tuesday, followed by a trip to Lawton next Friday.
Hackett Catholic drops to 3-4 and 3-2 within the Valley. The Irish head to Constantine Tuesday, then travel Saturday to Coloma.
