It took three full quarters Thursday night for Sturgis to find a way to stop Paw Paw senior Luke Tolliver.
But the Trojans did just that during the final eight minutes and rallied for a 53-47 boys basketball victory over the Redskins.
“Tremendous team effort tonight,” Sturgis coach Keith Kurowski said. “We fought through adversity in the second half after playing a solid first half and taking a 23-17 first half lead led. We took their best shot in that second half and played one of our best fourth quarters from a defensive standpoint.”
The 6-foot-4 Tolliver scored a game-high 26 points for Paw Paw, all but four of which came during the first three quarters.
After scoring 14 points in the third quarter, alone, Tolliver managed just four free throws during the final stanza, and Sturgis outscored the Redskins, 12-0 down the stretch to escape with the victory.
Samuel Leck knocked down a pair of 3-point shots and scored eight of his career-high 21 points during the pivotal fourth quarter for Sturgis. Leck converted five shots from long distance for the game.
“Sam Leck really kept us in the game in the second half,” Kurowski added. group. Great team chemistry and a bunch of hard workers really blue collar guys.
Brecken Stewart and Drew Murphy chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Trojans, while Thomas Kurowski finished with nine points. Dalton Smith also scored two points for Sturgis.
Paw Paw got also got eight points from Karsen Barnhart.
