The Glen Oaks Community College men’s basketball team, in search of its first MCCAA win as the season winds down, finally got just that Monday with a 93-87 win over Jackson.
After leading for most of the game, the Vikings closed out their fourth win of the season, moving to 4-21 overall and 1-13 in the league. Jackson dropped to 13-11 and 7-1 in conference play.
The Vikings and Jets would exchange early leads, with the Jets last holding a lead at 14-13 about seven minutes into the game. The Vikings would answer that lead, and build a 31-22 lead over the next 7 minutes of action. But the Jets would answer, and get the game back to even at 41-41 in the final minute. David Miller would hit a 17 footer, and Kal-El Spencer would get an offensive putback as time expired to give the Vikings the lead going into halftime at 45-41.
The Vikings would come out strong in the second half, going on a 13-4 run to open the second stanza, and taking the lead 58-45. It would be the largest lead of the game for either team. Jackson would answer with a run of their own, getting as close as they would come at 64-61, but the Vikings would answer again, building their lead back to double-digits at 76-66 with 8 minutes left in the contest. Jackson would get the deficit back to 4 with just over 2 minutes to go, but the Vikings would make enough free throws and stops to secure the victory.
“We really showed our toughness with this one tonight,” said Viking Head Coach David Victor.
“We did a really good job establishing an interior game of the drive, off the post-up, and on the offensive glass. Our shot selection was really as good as we’ve done all season. Though we turned it over too much for my liking, we made enough plays to get the win. I’m really proud of how we responded every time they went on a run, because those were runs that in the past, we might not have been able to answer. Tonight we did, and that is a huge piece to build on as we get ready for Wednesday.”
Jaquantay Rouser led the Vikings and all scorers with 24 points to go with 6 rebounds. Kal-El Spencer added 19 points and 5 assists, while David Miller got back to his double-double ways with 17 points and 10 rebounds, to go with 5 assists. Mike Barnfield posted a double-double of his own, with 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Adam Scott rounded out the Viking double-digit scorers with 13 points and 7 rebounds.
The Vikings will next be in action this Wednesday when they host the Muskegon Jayhawks. Tip is set for 7:30 pm.
