Holding rival Portage Northern to just five first-half points, the Portage Central girls varsity basketball team claimed a 44-23 Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference Friday.
The Mustangs shot 29.4 percent (15-of-51) in the win, which included five 3-point buckets, and scored 21 points in off 35 Portage Northern turnovers.
Abby Long dropped five shots for a game-high 15 points for Portage Central, followed by Kayla Mathieu’s 11-point effort. Annemarie Stacey had four points, Josie Muffley and Reagan Hoff both chipped in three, and Jessica Roth, Ally Griffin, Maizie Brown and Kaitlyn Brannstrom all totaled two.
Brown led the team with nine rebounds, Brannstrom grabbed six, and Muffley and Hoff both had five. Mathieu made five steals and Brown blocked four shots.
Northern shot 24.2 percent from the floor (8-of-33).
Alhanna Fuetes led P-Northern with eight points, and A’Keema Hunter, Mikayla Graham and Ella Bischof each finished with five.
