In a Division 2 district soccer match Tuesday, the Edwardsburg girls team scored once in each half to advance past Sturgis, 2-0.
The Eddies, who defeated Sturgis 4-3 in a Wolverine Conference match last week, improved to 12-5 overall. The Trojans ended the year with a 4-12-3 mark.
Three Rivers plays St. Joseph, and Stevensville Lakeshore and Edwardsburg are set to square off in the semifinals Thursday at Three Rivers.
Grace Gilmore scored for the Eddies less than six minutes into the contest. That would be it until Ashlee Low converted at the 13:53 mark in the second half. Sturgis took five of its six total shots on goal in the first half, while Edwardsburg finished with 15 shots on goal.
Sturgis keeper Kenzie Cain stopped 15 shots and Edwardsburg’s Hailee Hebard had six saves. Edwardsburg tallied seven corner kicks compared to four for Sturgis.
“I thought we played a very good first half, but were unable to put our attempts in the net,” Sturgis coach Tom Summerfield said. “The defense was solid, especially in goal. Kenzie Cain made a number of spectacular saves, coming out and diving at the feet of the onrushing opponent. Playing in their last game was the defensive back line made up of seniors Mikayla Buglione, Isabel Hernandez and Monica Lopez, along with Lupe Zuniga who played a midfield position.”
