A pair of third-quarter rushing touchdowns gave host Edwardsburg a little bit of safe space and it was enough to preserve a 30-12 victory against Three Rivers Friday in a Division 4 district championship football game.
Edwardsburg moves on to the regional round with a matchup against Lansing Sexton next weekend.
The Eddies (10-1), whose only loss of the year was to Three Rivers (8-3) on Oct. 6, had their offense rolling early finished their first drive with a touchdown run that was called a touchdown by two officials but then ruled a fumble inside the one-yard line. Three Rivers recovered and neither team would go on to score in the first quarter.
It was a 16-yard touchdown pass from Edwardsburg’ Tre Harvey to Caden Goggins with 5:29 to play in the second period, followed by a Kyle Shrider two-point conversion run, that would result in the first points of the contest. Three Rivers answered at the 1:27 mark with a 13-yard TD pass from Jalen Heivilin to Zac Meyer. The two-point conversion pass failed.
After entering intermission with an 8-6 lead, Edwardsburg pulled away in the third quarter with a five-yard keeper by Harvey (Bradley two-point conversion run) and a one-yard TD run by Chase Sager (conversion run failed) to make it a 22-6 lead.
In the fourth quarter, a Heivilin keeper from three yards out (conversion run failed) cut the deficit to 10 points with 9:95 remaining in the game. But Edwardsburg would seal the victory with a 49-yard touchdown run by Coggins (Harvey-to-Isaiah Mitchell two-point conversion pass) two minutes later.
Heivilin completed 20 of 36 passing attempts for 211 yards, targeting Gavin Charvat the bulk of the time. Charvat made eight catches — several in traffic followed by hard hits — for 90 yards. Jensin Blyly had two receptions for 42 yards, Jett Haifley had two grabs for 32 yards, Zac Meyer finished with two catches for 25 yards and Garrett McDonald had two receptions for 17 yards. McDonald also led the Wildcats with 19 rushing yards.
Coggins ran for 102 yards on eight carries for the Eddies. Nick Bradley rushed for 76 yards on 12 carries, Kyle Shrider added 74 yards on 11 rushes and Sager ran for 57 yards on 11 carries. Harvey contributed 34 rushing yards.
Charvat finished with 11 tackles, Traven Van Oss and Tyler Moore each had 10, and Tirrell Hausmanis and Chris Morrill produced seven stops apiece.
