In a Southern Central Athletic Association battle Monday at Colon, the host Magi collected a 50-37 varsity boys basketball victory over Burr Oak.
Andrew Smolarz and Clayton Wolf led Colon with 11 and 10 points, respectively, and Phillip Alva was next in line with nine. The Magi got out to a 16-9 advantage through the first eight minutes of play, which included 3-pointers by Austin Knauss and Andy Stoll.
Austin Stoll and Jonathan Smolarz each finished with six points, and Ryan Clark chipped in two.
For Burr Oak, Zach Boyd led all scorers with an 18-point effort. Braxton Hernandez added six, Victor Carter had five, and Armondo Beverly, Noah Norton, Noah Greene and Brandon Robbenolt each finished with two.
“Turnovers flat out killed us tonight,” Burr Oak coach Danny Schragg said. “We were way to sloppy with the ball to even make a comeback. Gave up to many easy baskets and somehow didn’t get completely blown out even though it felt that way. We rushed against their press and just took to many bad shot. Very frustrating losing this way.”
