The Burr Oak boys basketball team survived to play another day with a 53-47 victory Wednesday over Climax-Scotts in a Class D district semifinal game at Martin High School.
With a 16-15 halftime lead, the Bobcats used the third quarter to pull ahead with an 18-10 run. Combined with a 19-point fourth quarter, that was enough of a cushion against a Climax team that had nearly as much offensive production (22 points) in the fourth period as it had in the previous three combined.
Zach Boyd led a trio of Bobcats to score in double figures, finishing with 15 points and five rebounds. Dennis Currier had 13 points and six boards, and Braxton Hernandez had 11 points, six rebounds and three steals.
“Our defense was solid the whole night and we had some players step up big time offensively,” Burr Oak coach Danny Schragg said. “Dennis and Braxton we attacking the basket the whole (third) quarter, getting us easy baskets, and Skylar (Currier) hit a big 3 to give us energy.
“They pressed us and we made some terrible turnovers that almost cost us. Free throws (14 of 30) were our main issue tonight; we should’ve won by 15 but missed way too many at the line. Loved the energy my kids had and happy to get the win. Staying focused for Friday night now.”
Burr Oak moves on to the championship game Friday against Marcellus Howardsville Christian, which defeated Martin 63-50.
Cole Eshuis led the Panthers with 21 points and seven rebounds.
