Bronson overcame an eight-point deficit entering the fourth quarter to force overtime and eventually snag a 62-61 boys basketball victory Friday against Mendon.
Both teams were on fire in the first quarter as Bronson took an 18-16 advantage into the second period. Mendon regained the lead (29-26) by halftime and extended its cushion to 42-34 by the end of the third quarter.
Ethan Cossairt scored five of his game-high 17 points in the fourth quarter for the Vikings and Wyatt Heal had six of his 11 points in the fourth frame as Bronson outscored the Hornets 21-13 and make it a tie game (55-55) at the end of regulation.
Mendon had got a shot off in the final seconds of overtime but it didn’t fall.
“Extremely proud of the effort the guys showed tonight,” Mendon coach David Swanwick said. “We dug and fought for four quarters and an overtime. The guys worked their tails off and we just came up short.
“That is what we play for — to have the opportunities to win games and we were right there tonight.”
Keaton Crotser finished with 13 points, five assists, two steals and three rebounds for the Hornets. Greg Gifford popped in 12 points to go with six rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals, and Lukas Crotser registered 11 points, 10 rebounds and two assists.
Both Hunter Lovell and Gabe Parks finished with seven points, Braxton Samson and Ruben Vorster totaled four apiece and Jacob Hagenbuch added three. Lovell added five boards, Parks had three, Samson grabbed three and Vorster had two.
Mendon shot 50 percent from the field and 82.6 percent (19 of 23) from the free throw line.
